I’m glad Dance Flick was done. It was funny like I knew it would be and extra comical for me because I knew all of the movies they were spoofing. I truly believe that it’s better to know a lot of the flicks being done when it’s a parody film. Heck, I swear about 15 dance movies were spoofed.
The Wayans don’t hold back. We all know how they push the comedy envelope. I love it. Ya’ll can’t forget In Loving Color – “Two snaps up and a swirl.” I truly do. It was great seeing the second generation of Wayans put their foot deep up in Dance Flick. Good for them. For what it’s worth, I think the Wayans mastered the spoof movie for the 90s generation, and since then, everyone has tried to figure out their formula and failed. You need the Wayans to make a spoof movie that is more funny than corny.
I was so excited to see Kim Wayans (In Living Color). I’ve been wondering where the heck she’s been. For years I kept asking what has she been in. I wondered why we hadn’t seen her in any comedies the way we see the boys. She stomped with the big dogs. Heck, she was the queen of stomping. I loved her as Ms. Benita.
Anyhoo, the story’s main plot is a parody of the film Save the Last Dance. A suburban chick named Megan White (Shoshana Bush), moves to the inner-city naive as can be. She makes friends with Charity (Essence Atkins, UPN’s Half & Half) and Thomas (Damon Wayans, Jr., My ABC’s Wife And Kids) and they help her along the way through her mishaps. Oh and Thomas and Megan feel a little, ooo ooo aaa aaa, jungle fever because of their passion for dancing, but something keeps them one step from being together.
Look, I’m not a fan of parody movies at all. Once you’ve seen one, that’s good enough. The first Scary Movie done by the Wayans was a classic to me. I thought it was funny and I really cracked up. Then more and more of these films kept coming out only to push me away from them with their vulgarity and just plain jiveness, mediocre scripts and jokes. After seeing Dance Flick, it didn’t turn me off. I got my chuckles in and I was just happy that what scenes they chose for the trailer weren’t the only funny scenes. They did keep coming. I’m sure you all know how trailers might just show all the funny parts in a film. That burns me up when they do that. Dance Flick stays true to pardoy but spends plenty of time throwing in joke after joke that give you a chuckle and sometimes make you crack up.
If you’ve seen all of the dance movies out there like, Hairspray, You’ve Got Served, or Stomp the Yard, and you have a sense of humor, then this film may work for you and be quite enjoyable. I know young folks will like it.
If you don’t like parody films, or silly comedies, well, you may want to keep it moving on to the next film. If in doubt, just save it for Netflix.
