Watch the TrailerDate Night was good for singles, folks dating and married couples of all ages. It was a little over-the-top, but in such a great way. This film really threw out how monotonous marriage can become at times. I’m sure it really hit home for a lot of people, but no need to worry, just have a date night like the Fosters.
Phil (Steve Carell, NBC’s The Office) and Claire Foster (Tina Fey, NBC’s 30 Rock) is a busy suburban couple plodding day to day through their marriage and overall daily lives. Everything in their lives is so routine, right down to their weekly “date nights” of dinner at the same steakhouse and a movie. To add a little jazz and spice to their marriage they change up the restaurant by going into the busy city of Manhattan (I love New York) and visit a new trendy bistro. The restaurant is so busy; Phil has the bright idea to take another couple’s reservation.
Smiling from ear to ear, Phil and Claire are feeling good about their shady choice to take someone else’s reservations until, two very mean looking men tell them to get their behinds up and from that moment on, where a case of mistaken identity thrusts the Fosters into a night of terror, adventure and straight up ludicrousness.
Some of the scenes in Date Night were so comical, Steve and Tina had to be improvising or something, plus Steve seems like the improvisation King, especially when he is on NBC’s The Office. You know what’s great about this kind of premise; any solid actors with comedic skills would fit in these roles. It doesn’t matter the race or age. However, you can’t get any better than Steve and Tina. Come on now. They worked their characters like they didn’t know when the next pay check was coming in.
There were also some good scenes with Mark Walberg that were funny. He’s always perfect for a cameo. I’m not saying his character was funny; however, the dialogue and lines with him, Tina and Steve were extremely hilarious. Just watching those two, you know what’s up. Anyhoo, back to Mark, my man is staying FIT and he’s not 21 anymore. I always think about him and MTV way back in the day.
There were quite a few small roles for stars in Date Night. I see that James Franco is getting more roles to be humorous since the comedy film Pineapple Express. Good for him. I was surprised to see Tarji P. Hensen (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I Can Do Bad All by Myself) in such a minor role. Hope someone gives her some real shine soon! She’s excellent. Mila Kunas (The Book of Eli) is always a cutie. She and James seemed like a crazy young couple in love.
All around, Date Night was just a feel good silly and funny movie with the Fosters being such likeable characters. There were a few good messages that really make you say, “hmmm…okay.” Tina and Steve seemed like a real married couple with electrifying chemistry. I’m not talking sexual, just they had that best friend, cozy, family vibe and energy. I wouldn’t mind seeing it again when it comes out on DVD.
