Madea Goes to Jail is a comedy-drama film written and directed by Tyler Perry. It was inspired by Perry’s stage play of the same name. The movie centers on the recognized character Madea Simmons (Tyler Perry) going to jail for her reckless actions due to her out of control anger management problems. While in jail she makes friends with, in a motherly way, a young woman who is given Madea’s words of wisdom.
Review
There are a couple good messages in this film—of course. Tyler Perry isn’t going to do a piece of work without a Christian message in it and it’s all good because his fan base is all about the word, especially if it’s delivered in a comical way. I think with this latest work, Madea Goes To Jail, Perry might get some new followers. Flip the coin again, and he may have some old fans that’ve been straggling the fence with Perry’s movies getting sick of the loud, wise-crackin, colorful and over-the-top characters.
I’ve said this before, it DOES NOT matter what us critics think about the TP films because his followers and the numbers always show for themselves that the Tyler Perry brand is here to stay. And I'm not mad at him.
In this story, Madea Simmons (Perry) is shackled again and facing the judge because she has some major anger management issues. Madea never seems to act right and abide by the law so she finds herself going to jail. Meanwhile, Assistant District Attorney Joshua Hardaway (Derek Luke , Notorious) is assigned a case that’s way too personal for him defending a prostitute and ex druggie Candace Washington (Keisha Knight Pulliam, Beauty Shop and little Rudy from The Cosby Show). When Candace ends up in jail, Madea befriends the young woman and spits life knowledge to her in a Madeafied way.
Madea Goes To Jail is a comedy melodrama to the nth degree. First of all, check out the trailer. If you’ve seen it, you’ll see what I’m talking about. Is Perry trying to tell me that a good looking Lawyer (Joshua) can look past the fact that Candace is a con, junkie and prostitute and may catch some feelings? Come on now. Yeah, yeah, I know Tyler's movies have to have a lot of upbeat and feel good notes, but come on now. What are his people going to think?
This film is sooo exaggerated it’s unbelievable. Where do I begin?
Madea finding a forklift to drop some woman’s car on its head.
Madea in her old age never learning from her mistakes and going to jail, but hold up, she has no problem in giving advice to everyone else. Perhaps she should take a spoonful of her suggestions too.
Josh’s fancy being tickled by a street prostitute when he has an intelligent and pretty woman.
Madea is just wild in this movie. She doesn’t hold back what she’s thinking or how she feels. Funny thing about her is she’ll actually provide some good advice when she feels like butting in someone’s business and kicking life knowledge. Just don’t make homegirl mad. She’ll go off and she does in this flick. If you love Madea, then you will really like this movie because Madea is all up in it acting a bigger fool than usual. She's crazy funny.
Rudy Huxtable, I mean Keisha Knight Pulliam is such a good actress. I really believed her role. She had me shedding a few tears with her hooking self. Couldn’t a sista comb her weave a bit if she’s trying to work the streets? Man, are men that hard up? YUCK! Anyhoo, she has good acting range and I really hope we see more of her and she ends up in more block-busters.
Tyler’s main fans are going to think this movie is hilarious. For me, it went back and forth from funny to serious like I was watching Venus and Serena Williams battling each other for the Grand Slam title. My goodness it felt like it was all over the place. Did I like it? Yes…but it wasn’t one of my favorites he has done. It’s great for a matinee. If not, definitely rent it. I’m going to support Tyler Perry’s works no matter what.
