Push

On paper, Push sounds like it would be a great movie, but once transferred to the big screen, it didn't quite play out how I believe it could have.

Review

This is a weird movie. I’m still trying to digest it. Push isn’t a bad film, but it isn’t something I’ll remember in years to come. There are interesting characters, that’s for sure, who all have their own special skills that I know nothing about in my life. I just have my 5 senses and that’s it. Give me some telekinetic or clairvoyant talents – okay?

Well, just think about the story. You have a large group of individuals born with extraordinary gifts. I’m talking these people can see all up in the future (Watchers), move object with their minds (Movers), get into people’s heads and change their thoughts and push them to do things they wouldn’t normally do (Pushers), and kill with just a loud pitch scream (Bleeders). Oh, and some sniffing fools who can sniff an item that may belong to you and get flashes of everywhere you’ve been. They are all sought after by a secret section of the US Government called "Division" headed by Agent Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou, Blood Diamond). They want to use these people as weapons by trying to increase their skills and create an army.

All of this centers on Nick (Chris Evans, Fantastic Four), a mover who’s been living in Hong Kong trying to stay hidden from Division since childhood. Things change when he’s tracked down by a 13-year-old girl named Cassie (Dakota Fanning, The Secret Life of Bees). She’s a watcher who is trying to find Kira (Camilla Belle, 10,000 BC) who’s an excellent Pusher that escaped Division. She is the only person who has ever survived experimentation to increase psychic abilities. If they find her, they find the key to possibly ending Division. I can't much blame girlfriend for jetting.

First of all, if I were Nick, I’d be upset if I was in hiding for a decade and some teeny bopper tracks me down assuming I’m going to help her find some chick. I say keep it moving shorty.

On paper, Push sounds good to me. The unique characters and their abilities are very interesting and the story could continue over and over again with new characters. Now, to the story transformed to the big screen, I just feel that it could have been better. At times it seemed like it was all over the place jumping from scene to scene introducing new characters and having me wonder "Who is that?"

The special effects were on point and I really liked the fight scenes especially the last pow- wow. A lot of the different paranormal skills were used to get their fight on. There were a couple of scenes that make you want to climb a wall because of very loud screaming. I'll leave that one alone.

Push also was a bit confusing at times. I must have missed a couple of statements or explanations or something, because there were moments I was trying to figure out what was going on. Perhaps it was my wondering mind or just me. Perhaps it was just an all-over-the- place script. I thought about the movie Jumper and Wanted while watching this picture. Although Wanted surpassed both of these films. Push just didn't have the character development and plot like Wanted had. I guess mystic power movies must be the thing because there sure are a lot of them out there. The idea of course is to come up with new and improved ways of showing them that must include a good script, special effects, and actions.

This is a good movie for a DVD night. There's just something about it that you really don’t need to go to the theater and see it. A good sound system is great for this movie. I liked it and it didn’t bore me however, I would have been fine waiting 3 months until it came out on DVD.
