Fans of Sex and the City must celebrate and cheer. The HBO romantic comedy series has finally made it’s way to the big screen. Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), New York City’s popular author and columnist, is back and more stylish and in love than ever. Her three girlfriends Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda are right there with her stirring their own pots of life’s twists in the big city.
Review
Oh, my girls are all back in effect. Break out the wines and spirits. I thought they were all mad at me because I haven’t seen them in so long. Considering it has been 4 years, the girlfriends all look great. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samatha (Kim Cattrall), Charotte (Kristin Davis), and Miranda (CynthiaNixon). Oops, how could I forget my fabulous friend Miss New York City. It’s been 4 long years since the gals have graced our teles with their wit, love lives, humor, sense of fashion and unceasing candor. Writer/Director Michael Patrick King, tried sticking to the HBO series’ main themes, and he didn’t disappoint. Sure, there were some ‘come on now’ moments, but what movie doesn’t have those. If a movie has the ability to stir up various emotions in me, and the audience around me, than it did its job of entertaining. And, Sex and the City did tickle my tear ducts.
The movie did last a bit longer than I had anticipated, but I was not bored. I felt like I got my money’s worth. The movie had a soap opera flare to it, with having the guy, not having the guy, childbirth, cheating, betrayal, withholding truths, temptation, sex, love, happiness, depression, and just a host of other typical soap main story lines. Perhaps I am bias because I love me some stories.
I don’t want to reveal too much and spoil the movie for my readers, but even though there was truly a fashion show scene, the entire movie was one big FASHION EXTRAVAGANZA. I often wonder if women dress like that everyday in New York City. Perhaps, my city is too small and it definitely isn’t the fashion Capital of the world. That is for sure.
The film does include some other favorite characters like Magda (Lynn Cohen) the nanny, Harry Goldenblatt (Even Handler), Charlotte’s husband, Jerry (Smith) Jerrod (Jason Lewis) who still is very hot and Standford Blatch (Willie Garson). Jennifer Hudson, is a newbie who plays Louise, Carrie’s personal assistant. She did an okay job for the script that she was provided, but it was not Oscar noteworthy. The entire story with Louise and Carrie seemed forced, not by the actresses, but by the script.
Michael Patrick King did a great job with opening the movie with character detail that helps newcomers who never watched an episode learn and understand the premise and character personalities. So, if you have never seen the series, go on and watch the movie. These 40 somethings look fabulous and age is not hidden in this movie.

Reel Talk is my to-the-point comments and opinions—and it contains spoilers. Don’t read this if you plan to watch this movie!
Okay, I don’t know what it is, but Jennifer’s acting did not seem Oscar worthy. Perhaps it was the script. I don’t know. I like Jennifer a lot. I think she is very humble and beautiful, but I sure wish she would close her mouth. Watch her. Watch her in Dreamgirls and watch her in Sex and the City. She tends to have her mouth open. It’s weird. It makes her look a little duhhh and she is anything but. This woman is dynamite.
It is nice that they cast a minority in this film, but my goodness did they over do it with the black girl swooping in to save the day. This 26 year old chick comes in to Carrie’s life and helps her get everything in order and of course at the end, Carrie expresses how much Louise changed her life. COME ON!!!!!
And, what really was messed up was the fact that Louise came to New York city to find Love…MMM Kay….. and her ex Will told her she wasn’t the one. MMM kayy, but a few months later he miraculously realizes that she is and pops the question. So, she moved to New York for Love and she ends up finding it in her home town in St. Louis. Whatever.
And what is up with the black chick renting brand name purses? GHETTO!!!! Maybe I will let this go because she is 26. NOOOOOO heck noooo, I am not letting it go. She could have bought a real one on credit.
Lily
Charlotte’s 3 year old daughter was gorgeous. She was soooo cute….But, are you trying to tell me that a 3 year old would answer the phone and not hand it to an adult? Now clearly she hears someone saying hello on the other end and it is reflexive for anyone of any age to say “hello” or “hi” back. Right??? Isn’t it? So why would this girl who has no problem saying the word ‘sex’ answer the phone, shut it without saying a word and shove it into her glitter cupcake purse? They had that little girl looking stupid. I wasn’t feeling that. It would have been better for me when Big called Carrie to just have her phone turned off or left behind in the apartment. Another thing… if you know your man is sounding strange the night before the wedding and asking all types of questions, why wouldn’t you call him in the morning to make sure he is okay? Huh?
Big
Why in the world didn’t he just roll down his window when he saw Carrie? HUH? WHY? It made no sense at all. She is standing right there. Instead, you say to yourself, “Carrie, turn around.” Oh my goodness.
Big seemed like a dream man, just buying a beautiful penthouse for Carrie and him. He seemed so calm and docile…but just wanted to love Carrie. Dang, where can some sistas get a big too?
Charlotte
Is she really that much of a bubble head? Whatever she’s a cute character.
Miranda
Okay, I am not one for cheating or lying to your spouse…But why would she not have sex with her husband for 6 months. Then, her dumb behind is going to ask if that is bad. UHHH YEAH. Heck…6 weeks is bad. A man needs love. There is no excuse for you not to provide your man with your very essence and then look shocked when he tells you he got some from somewhere else. HELLLLLOOOOOOOOO! Miranda…now come on. She is a smart woman. She should know these dynamics. Fool!!!!! Miranda always got on my nerves anyway.
Ohhhh, how did I forget. She had some nerves telling Big that he and Carrie were crazy to be getting married. She knew what a marriage phobe Big was and she ran her mouth and placed that seed of doubt in his mind. If I were Carrie, I would have had to ho slap her.
Samatha
She will always be Samatha. She didn’t disappoint me. Except she gave up that fine honey, Smith. But I respect her. She never cheated. You go girl!
New York
She is so glamorous. New York seemed so sexy, hot and fun. Heck, can I have a girlfriend like New York. Hellooooo New York. Hi you doing girl? Only problem with my girl New York…It seems like I might have to have some loot to be her friend. I might have to have some clout. It just seems like my girl N.Y. is a tad bit materialistic. Heck, you have to take the good with the bad.
Packing
Who do you know that packs 37 boxes of crap in high heels and skirts? Not me. I didn’t see one pair of tennis shoes or slippers. Carrie had heels on through the entire movie. I'm surprised they didn’t show her showering with them.
Carrie
I know Carrie was super depressed…but I think she should have contacted Big or just gone on and got married when he apologized outside the church. He said he got scared, but he was ready. I mean any other woman would have gone ahead and got married to the man she loved off and on for 10 years. Instead she runs away and never wants to hear from him again. I could not have done that. Here she is in her dress and 200 guests… Just walk into the church together… My goodness. Everything was fine a week before that. You were together for 4 years in love. Come on now. They dragged out her depression forever it seemed like.
Tears
I definitely choked up a few times. 40 and getting married for the first time. MMMM that has to be rough for the woman who isn’t married and wants love, and to sleep with one man with no guilt. It has to be hard for the woman who sees a bunch of twenty-somethings married. It’s got to be rough.
