Review

Awww, The Proposal is such a cute romantic comedy. Sure, you can guess the ending just like any other cute little romantic comedy, but it’s still worth seeing. This genre of movies are so darn contrived. They truly are. The manipulation you see is so obvious. What can you do? Take it for what it is and get some popcorn and sprinkle your favorite popcorn seasoning salt on it.

Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock, Premonition) is the executive editor-in-chief of a very prominent book publishing company. She’s all about herself. She’s demanding, controlling, feared by her staff, has not a shred of social skills and treats her personal assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) like crud. Her assistant is kind, loyal and excellent at his job. Home dude is so loyal, that when Margaret’s job is threatened because she’s on the verge of being deported back to her native land Canada, he goes along with Margaret’s cockamamie plan to get married to save her ice cold behind.

They think it’s going to be easy, however immigration services can smell their deception a mile away and it stinks something fierce. So, the two are forced to spend the weekend together at Andrew’s family’s home in Sitka, Alaska to come off as legit. Just like any other Romantic Comedy film, we meet the quirky family, and the cutest of all is Grandma Annie “Gammy” played by the lovely Betty White (Bold and the Beautiful). She’s such a lovely added touch. . I just adore that woman. She looks like one of those sweet grandmothers everyone wants to have.

Sandra plays one tough cookie. I’m use to her in the ditzy and flighty roles. It was great to see her play a different character. Did she play like Miranda Pristley from Devil Wears Prada? Ohhh nooo she didn’t do it like Meryl Miss Streep if your nasty. Regardless, she tried and she made me laugh.

She and Ryan Reynolds have some pretty good on screen chemistry. Ryan is perfect for this part. I really liked him in the comedy Just Friends. He’s definitely not skimping on his work out either. My goodness, he’s practically naked at one point in Proposal. Oh yes, did I forget to mention that? There’s some almost straight up nakedness going on. I was SHOCKED. I could'nt believe Miss Sandra. I guess she said “HAH” to everyone. She’s 44 and has a body of a 24 year old. I’m so impressed and jealous. Sandra, tell me your secrets sista-girl.

Anyhoo, Proposal has a formulaic storyline. It forces stupid scenes that I’m sure are just thrown in there for some chuckles. For instance, Margaret doing a booty shake dance in the wilderness and another scene showcasing a less than desirable male stripper. Mmm mmm mmm. He practically burned my dag on eyeballs from his tragicness. For me, it all felt a little out of place.

The movie has a lot of heart and spirit. It’s a sweet film with likeable characters. REALLY great for DVD and a fun afternoon at the theater.
