Synopsis

First time writer and director Bryan Bertino wrote an, ‘inspired by trued events’ film about a young couple staying at a family isolated retreat home. They are terrorized on their first night by 3 demented masked strangers. The couple’s only fault was that they were home.

Review

Jason and Michael Myers always scared the mess out of me because of those darn masks. I actually debated whether or not if I wanted to see this flick because I get so scared watching movies where the killers wore masks. Plus, the trailer alone had my heart beating at high-speed. Once I watched the movie, I realized that all the scary scenes were all captured in the trailer and it totally took the freight out of it for me. Why writer/director Bryan Bertino gives the most chilling scene away in the trailer is beyond me. You all know when the strange man quietly appears in the distance while Kristen (Liv Tyler) just stands in the kitchen smoking her cigarette. If I hadn’t seen that in the trailer, I would have jumped just like the young man sitting next me. It was so funny, he yelped, “Oh JESUS.” Punk!

The terrorizing of the 3 masked psychos dragged out for what seemed like the entire movie. After I realized that they weren’t trying to inflict physical harm to the couple right away, it ceased to scare me. But, that’s just me. Because, the loud mouth screamers next to me, I am sure beg to differ. Those chicks totally drove me insane screaming and talking through the entire film. It took every fiber of my being to not shout out, “SHUT UP.” Whew, as I digress…

Liv Tyler (Reign Over Me) truly made me a believer in her acting ability. She displayed fear to her very core as the lead character Kristen. She and her boyfriend James (Scott Speedman, Underworld) went to James’ childhood secluded home for a romantic getaway. They had no idea that their alone time was going to be invaded by demented mask intruders that take terror to another level. Is the movie original? NO! Is the movie memorable? Maybe, if you have never seen the trailer. Does the movie entertain? Yes. I would recommend watching the movie, but don’t pay for a full price ticket. Go on and pop yourself some Jiffy Pop popcorn and rent the DVD.
